Tiruchi Municipal Corporation has decided to implement the restructured business license and renewal fee with retrospective effect from April 1.

It is mandatory for the traders to obtain a license from the municipal bodies for carrying on any business and for starting any new venture. The license has to be renewed once a year. As far as interest is concerned, the Corporation has been empowered by the State Government to issue licenses for trade and professions. As per the process, traders will apply for registration with business details and other inputs. After verification, the corporation will issue the license.

The existing fee structure for business license registration and renewal came into effect from 1st April, 2000. Depending on the nature of business, the corporation collects between ₹50 and ₹2,000 as renewal fee. Fees are around ₹100 and ₹200 for most trades.

Since the corporation-fixed rate for business licenses is still in force for over two decades, the civic body unveiled the new fee structure for issuance of licenses and renewal scheme a few months back. It increased business licenses keeping in mind the emergence of new forms of business.

Textile Showrooms, Hardware Stores, Furniture, Ice Cream Manufacture and Sale, Restaurants, Hotels, Rice Mills, Rice Retail, Camphor Making, Collection and Sale of Camphor, Wax Melting, Manure Storage and Sale, Medicine Sales, Soap Sales, The sale of bottled water and the operation of canteens were among the long list of businesses to be covered in the upper revision of the license and annual renewal fee.

As per the revised framework, the minimum fee for any trade has been fixed at ₹100 and maximum ₹25,000. Jewelery Shops, Hotels, Lodges, Havelis, Cinemas Inside Canteens, Pet Clinics, Pet Spas, Petrol Pumps, LPG Gas Distribution Agencies, Hospitals, Laboratories, Scan Centres, Pharmacies, Malls, Departmental Stores, Fruit and Vegetable Stores, Warehouses, mobile phone stores, two wheeler and four wheeler showrooms are among the trades that have been brought under the purview of trade license category. Many newly added trades have to pay between ₹5,000 and ₹25,000.

Sources said the revised fee structure will be implemented with retrospective effect from April 1. The concerned authorities will take immediate steps to recover the trade and business charges.
