TMC focuses on undoing labor losses as tea garden workers get low wages, closed premises in 2021

Learning from its poor performance in 2021, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now decided to focus on the tea gardens of North Bengal.

Party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will address tea garden workers at the Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress, trade union wing on September 11. He will reach North Bengal on Saturday in his second visit to the region.

In 2021, the party performed poorly in North Bengal, especially in Alipurduar district, where it could not open its account. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, TMC did not get a single seat from the area.

Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar are areas of tea garden where tribals dominate. In the workshops organized in the area, tea workers have put forward their demands and proposals. On Saturday, the trade union leaders listened to the problems of the workers and on Sunday Abhishek Banerjee will address them.

According to INTTUC, the workers face issues ranging from low wages to closed tea gardens and the central government has also not fulfilled the promises made to the group.

Minimum daily wage is an issue that tea garden workers are fighting for. During the tripartite meeting on March 17, Rs 212 was offered to the workers, which was not acceptable to them. There are 78 tea gardens in Darjeeling and 41 in Dooars, of which 10 are closed. About 4.5 lakh laborers work in these tea gardens.

A senior TMC leader told News18, “This is the first time that our party is holding a separate meeting with tea workers. Abhishek Banerjee will show us the way forward.

Interestingly, TMC had replaced some of the block leaders of the region. Party Supremo and Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee Had visited the region after the Bengal results and asked the leaders to focus more on connecting with the people.

TMC insiders say that the party is trying to cash in on the BJP’s unfulfilled promises in the region. A month ago, Abhishek Banerjee had asked party leaders to submit a report on the area. He also made a surprise visit to a local market to get an idea of the ground situation.
