New Delhi: Alleging police violence in Tripura, a delegation of TMC MPs met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday.

The MLAs sitting on a dharna outside the Home Ministry since Monday morning were given time to meet Shah in the afternoon.

“We told them in detail how leaders were being arrested and MPs were being beaten up. He told us that he had spoken to Tripura CM yesterday over phone and assured us that he would seek a report from the state,” said TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee.

The delegation that met Shah included Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Shantanu Sen, Kalyan Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, Mala Roy among 11 other MPs.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is scheduled to land in Delhi in the evening, is also planning to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue.

Hitting out at Shah, the TMC chief said that the Union Home Minister has “not yet shown courtesy” and met TMC MPs, who are seeking an audience with him over the violence in Tripura.

“During my visit to Delhi, I will be meeting the Prime Minister. Apart from various matters related to the state, I will take up issues related to Tripura violence as well as increase in the jurisdiction of BSF,” she told reporters before leaving for Delhi.

Banerjee wondered why the Human Rights Commission was “not taking note” of the ongoing use of brute force in the northeastern state.

“Tripura Chief Minister (Biplab Deb) and his government are defying the SC’s direction. They have to answer to the common people. I will appeal to the higher judiciary to take action against his government as per law.”

The Tripura Police on Sunday arrested actor-turned-Trinamool Congress leader Sayoni Ghosh on charges of attempt to murder after she allegedly shouted “khela hobe” (we will play) at Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s meeting on Saturday night. conspicuously interrupted.

Ghosh, secretary of the youth wing of Trinamool Congress West Bengal, was arrested after being called for questioning at a police station in Agartala, a police official said.

The Supreme Court recently directed the Tripura Police to ensure that no political party is prevented from exercising its powers in accordance with law to conduct peaceful campaign.

TMC has repeatedly alleged that its candidates are being prevented from campaigning by ruling BJP supporters there.
