The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is all set to take up the issue of acquittal of 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case at the national level.
The Gujarat government released 11 people as part of its remission and premature release policy on August 15, when one of the convicts, Radheshyam Shah, moved the SC. Bilkis was gang-raped and her three-year-old daughter Saleha was among 14 people killed by a mob on March 3, 2002 in Limkheda taluka of Dahod district. Bilkis was pregnant at the time.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra has already filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the exemption. The party is now planning to take it politically as well, in response to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allegations of corruption.
The women’s wing of TMC plans to hold rallies in every district of Bengal on August 25 and 26. There will also be a rally in Kolkata on August 25.
Speaking to News18, TMC Mahila Congress President, Chandrima Bhattacharya said, “Bano was brutally gang-raped during the communal violence that took place after the Godhra incident. His family was brutally murdered. The rapists and murderers were found guilty and convicted by the court. But shamelessly these 11 convicts were released from jail on Independence Day. Is this how BJP respects women?
Bhattacharya said that they want the release to be cancelled.
Party insiders say that issues related to women in Bengal have a huge impact. The party believes that women voters played a key role in TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s victory over the BJP. “This is the reason why the Bilkis issue has been raised in court, on social media and now also on the streets. Not only in Bengal, Trinamool Congress will also raise this issue in Tripura, Assam and Meghalaya.
Another issue raised by Trinamool Congress is Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s remarks on farmers. Tenney, whose son is in prison last year on charges of escaping farmers, made a controversial speech live-streamed by his supporters, in reference to protesting farmers, about “the dogs barking and their car chasing”. I talked.
All TMC spokespersons have condemned it. Minister Shashi Panja said, ‘It is disgusting. This is the behavior of a Union Minister. TMC is opposing it. The way he has insulted the farmers is unbearable.
