Director General of Police (DGP) C. Silendra Babu said crime cases have come down in Salem City and Salem Range, which includes Salem, Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Krishnagiri districts.

Participating in a review meeting with police officers at the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Salem City, Mr. Babu talked about measures to curb anti-social elements, eradication of gutka and narcotics, surveillance of religious fanatics, measures to reduce road accidents. discussed issues such as Creating awareness on road safety, prevention of crime against women and children, monitoring of social media crimes, cyber crimes and weekly holidays for police personnel.

Mr Babu told reporters that in the year 2021, 24 cases of murder were registered in Salem city, which came down to 14 in 2022, a decrease of 42%. Similarly, in the Salem range, 147 cases of murder were reported in 2021 and 125 in 2022, which is 15 percent less. He said that the Salem range and city police personnel are performing well and have brought down the crime rate effectively. A woman inspector from Salem’s Sankagiri went to Madhya Pradesh in connection with theft and recovered ₹46 lakh. The DGP said the focus was on eradicating lotteries and narcotics in the district and 120 villages in the Salem range have been declared drug-free.

Responding to a question on why police personnel are not given weekly off, Mr Babu said that during festivals and emergencies like the recent cylinder blast in Coimbatore, the police were on continuous duty for more than 10 days. He said that in such circumstances it is difficult to give weekly leave to the workers.

On the recent increase in the fine amount for violation of traffic rules, the DGP said it was the announcement of the central government.

Shri Babu inspected the Mobile Forensic Science Lab and also inspected the recently launched Quick Response Team. He inaugurated 511 CCTV cameras installed in different parts of Salem city. Later, the DGP awarded certificates of appreciation to 11 special team police officers who took prompt action and arrested the accused in various cases.

A press release by the Salem City Police said that in 2022, two people were detained under the National Security Act and 151 people were detained under the provisions of the Goondas Act in the city of Salem. In the Salem range, 121 persons were detained under the Goondas Act, an increase of 13% over the previous year. In 2022 alone, 21,120 CCTV cameras were installed in Salem City.
