Trinamool will change the party’s constitution

The Trinamool Congress on Monday announced its decision to change its constitution to include more members in its committees from other states.

The decision was taken at a meeting of party president Mamata Banerjee and leaders like Yashwant Sinha, Pavan Varma and Mukul Sangma. The Working Committee empowered Ms. Banerjee to make necessary changes in the party structure.

“In the current political situation, only Trinamool Congress can give competition to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, we are ready for battle. After today’s meeting, the Trinamool Congress will emerge in a new all-India avatar,” said Pavan Varma who recently joined the party.

TMC MP and national spokesperson Derek O’Brien said these changes do not mean that there will be a change in the party’s DNA. “To defeat the BJP, Mamata Di is the strongest, most reliable and most experienced leader. This is because she is not only a three-time Chief Minister but also a seven-time MP.”

Earlier in the day, Ms Banerjee felicitated former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and other Congress leaders who had recently joined the Trinamool Congress. Party’s national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee was also present in the working committee meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residence.

Along with Ms. Banerjee, several leaders including Mr. Sinha and Mr. Verma spoke at the meeting. Other issues such as whether the TMC should join the Congress in protest against the policies of the central government were discussed. The leadership appreciated the work of the party in Tripura.
