At least 22 candidates, including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, are in the fray for the bypolls to four assembly constituencies in the state, an Election Commission official said on Friday. Saha, a Rajya Sabha member, was appointed as the chief minister of the state last month, replacing Biplab Kumar Deb. Bypolls to four assembly constituencies- Agartala, Town Bardowali, Soorma and Jubrajnagar will be held on June 23. We have received 24 nomination papers for the by-elections. Saha is the BJP candidate for the Town Bordowali assembly seat, while the Congress has fielded its heavyweight leader Ashish Kumar Saha in the constituency and the Left Front candidate is Raghunath Sarkar of all. The Soorma constituency of Dhalai district saw a fight between three candidates – Anjan Das of the Left Front, Swapna Das Paul of the BJP and Baburam Satnami of Tipra Motha, the regional party led by royal descendant Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. Congress supported Tipra Motha candidate for the seat. The Jubrajnagar constituency, considered a traditional Left stronghold, will see a contest between BJP candidate Malina Debnath and CPI(M)’s Shailendra Chandra Nath.
The Trinamool Congress, which aims to spread its feet in the northeastern state, also fielded its candidates in all the four constituencies. Altogether 1,88,854 voters can exercise their franchise in the by-elections to be held in all the four seats. The bypolls are necessitated due to the death of CPI(M) MLA Ramendra Chandra Debnath (Jubrajnagar) and resignations of Roy Burman (Agartala) and Ashish Saha (Town Bardowali). Moreover, the Soorma seat fell vacant after the Speaker of the Assembly disqualified BJP MLA Ashish Das. Counting of votes will take place on June 26.
