Rome: US President Joe Biden said his government was “clumsy” to handle a security deal with Australia and Britain and has been in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron since a diplomatic crisis between Washington and its oldest ally last month. The two leaders shared warm words and friendly gestures, but Macron later said France’s trust needed to be regained by deeds, not words.

And – but I want to make it clear: France is an extremely, extremely valuable partner – extremely – and a power in its own right.”
Biden also said that the United States does not have an older and more loyal ally than France and said there is no place where the two nations cannot cooperate.
“I was under the impression that France was informed long ago that the deal was not going through. I, to be honest to God, didn’t know you weren’t,” Biden told Macron.
Macron said his meeting with Biden was “important” and necessary to “look to the future” as his country and the United States work to fix the fence.
Biden and Macron displayed warm body language, arms and arms at each other’s backs as they greeted each other. They shook hands several times while journalists watched the beginning of their meeting.
“What really matters now is what we do together in the coming weeks, the coming months, the years to come,” Macron said.
‘The evidence is better’
Macron later told reporters that the meeting with Biden had been helpful, along with a “strong” US commitment regarding European defence, but what happened next was important.
“Faith is like love: declarations are good, but evidence is better,” Macron said.
A senior US administration official said after the meeting that the two sides were “moving forward” in their relationship and that after difficult talks in September and October, the talks were more lucrative.
The official said Biden and Macron discussed the rise of China and the questions it raises for democracies and market economies. They also discussed Iran, supply chains, steel and aluminum tariffs and trade.
The two countries issued a lengthy joint statement after portraying themselves as global democratic partners in the fight against a range of challenges, including the coronavirus pandemic, the climate crisis and ensuring the “indivisible security” of the NATO alliance.
Washington has taken several steps to improve relations with Paris since the rift last month.
Biden and Macron spoke to each other last week. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also visited Paris, where he acknowledged that the United States could have “better communication”. Vice President Kamala Harris also announced that she would travel to Paris in November to meet with Macron.
Biden and Macron met at Villa Bonaparte, the French embassy in the Vatican, in what a French diplomat said was an important mark of Biden’s goodwill.
“This is an important gesture,” said the French diplomat, adding that the United States had admitted that it had underestimated the impact of its actions.
France now wants to see if Biden follows through on his words. “Trust is being rebuilt. This is a step. Goodwill gestures were given, we will see if they last for a long time,” the diplomat said.
Biden and Macron are in Rome for the Group of 20 summit of world leaders, which opens on Saturday.
