Tea cafe brand Chaayos was being trolled on the internet on Thursday for following and liking the social media page of a radical group. Founder and CEO Nitin Saluja claimed that the Twitter handle Chaayos It was hacked for about half an hour when some objectionable tweets were liked.
He apologized for the incident and said that the company respects all religions equally.
“We have investigated and found that the @Chaayos Twitter account was hacked for about half an hour and that time some objectionable tweets were liked. For this I personally apologize. I personally want to ensure everyone that as a founder and an organization, we respect all religions equally,” Nitin Saluja tweeted.
As some Twitterati questioned whether it had a ‘brand policy’, the company clarified that the page was ‘inadvertently liked from her account’ and confirmed that the brand respects people of all religions equally. And will continue to do so. Here’s what happened.
Followers of the Delhi-based brand’s Twitter page recently noticed that it has liked a page called “Saffron Love” which often shares radical posts. This particular incident angered many on Twitter for questioning his ‘policy’.
Sharing a screenshot of the same, one commented, So is this official @chayos policy or some social media intern has gone mad?
Hi @Chaayos this is disgusting. Please let us know if this is your official stance?, commented another.
Here in India there is a company, @Chaayos promoting hate speech and genocidal inhuman rhetoric against minorities.
The tweets are bad and hopefully someone gets fired for this, but please, this is not solidarity, it’s a cancellation and boycott of culture. And many people are involved in it these days.
Some even suggested the brand to unfollow the page.
What did Chaayos say?
The company later clarified that the page was “inadvertently liked from his account” and clarified that this is not what the brand stands for.
Taking to Twitter, it said, there was an offensive tweet that was inadvertently liked from our account. Chaayos despises and denies any of the views mentioned in the said tweet. We apologize to everyone and those affected by this.
We would like to assure our guests and team that as a responsible organization we have always respected people of all religions equally and will continue to do so.
We are investigating why this happened and corrective action will be taken at the earliest.
