Twitter sacked several Indian employees, including marketing and communications teams, as mass layoffs began

Twitter has started laying off its employees across the world and many of them only came to know about it when they were unable to log in to their official email id and internal system. According to reports, layoffs have been done in all countries including India. A report by NDTV claimed that Twitter has sacked the entire marketing and communications department in India.

According to reports, the sectors that have been affected include engineering, marketing and other departments. The job cuts globally were ordered by Elon Musk to achieve economies of scale and make the USD 44 billion acquisition viable. Musk, the world’s richest businessman, began his innings on Twitter last week by sacking CEO Parag Agarwal as well as the CFO and some other top executives.

Musk has now begun a massive exercise to reduce the company’s global workforce. “The lay-off has started. Some of my colleagues have received an email about this,” a Twitter India employee said on the condition of anonymity.

Another source said the layoffs have affected a “significant part” of the Indian team. Full details of the job cuts were not immediately available.

Twitter India did not respond to emailed queries, PTI reported.

“In an effort to get Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” the US-based social media platform previously said in an internal email to employees. It said that “everyone will receive a personalized email”.

The company will temporarily close all offices for the safety of employees as well as the Twitter system and customer data.

Twitter had said, ‘If you are in the office or going to the office, please return home.

While Twitter has clashed several times with the government over freedom of speech, the company in emails barred employees from discussing confidential company information on social media in the press or elsewhere.
