Twitter is testing a new ‘Safety Mode’ feature that temporarily blocks accounts for using insults or hate comments for seven days, aimed at curbing harmful language on the microblogging platform.

Twitter said in a blogpost on Wednesday that the new safety feature has been rolled out to a small feedback group on iOS, Android and Twitter.com, starting with accounts that have English-language settings enabled.

“We have rolled out features and settings that can help you feel more comfortable and in control of your experience, and we want to do more to ease the burden on people dealing with unwanted conversations.

“Unwanted tweets and noise can get in the way of conversations on Twitter, so we’re introducing Safety Mode, a new feature that aims to reduce disruptive conversations.”

The Safety Mode feature temporarily blocks accounts for seven days for using potentially harmful language — such as insulting or hateful comments — or sending repetitive and uninvited replies or mentions.

When this feature is turned on in Settings, Twitter’s systems will assess the likelihood of negative engagement by considering the content of the tweet and the relationship between the tweet author and respondent, Twitter said.

“Our technology takes existing relationships into account, so accounts you follow or interact with frequently will not be autoblocked.”

For people in the Feedback group, Security Mode can be enabled through the ‘Privacy & Security’ option in Settings.

“Authors of harmful or uninvited Tweets will be autoblocked by our technology, meaning they will be temporarily unable to follow your account, view your Tweets, or send you direct messages,” it said.

Twitter said that during the product development process, it conducted several listening and feedback sessions for trusted partners specializing in online safety, mental health and human rights, including its Trust and Security Council members.

His response influenced adjustments to make Security Mode easier to use and helped think through ways to address potential manipulation of Twitter’s technology, it added.

“These trusted partners were also instrumental in nominating Twitter account owners to join the response group, prioritizing people from marginalized communities and female journalists. We want you to enjoy healthy conversations, so this test There is a way in which we limit excessive and unwanted conversations that can disrupt those conversations,” it said.

Twitter said it aims to better protect the person receiving the tweets by reducing the prevalence and visibility of harmful comments.

“We’ll see how Safety Mode is working and include improvements and adjustments before bringing it to everyone on Twitter. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our work to empower people with those tools.” have what they need to feel more comfortable participating in public conversations,” it added.
