in one official blog post, Twitter announced that it would no longer allow Twitter accounts to enroll in the text message/SMS method of 2FA unless they are a Twitter Blue subscriber. According to Twitter, the reason behind this decision is due to bad actors taking advantage of this feature.
Twitter says that non-Twitter Blue subscribers who are already enrolled and have taken advantage of text-based 2FA “will have 30 days to disable this method and enroll in another.” And, “After March 20, 2023, we will no longer allow non-Twitter Blue customers to use text messages as a 2FA method.”
Till now, Twitter offered three methods of two-factor authentication – text-based login, security key and authentication app for all Twitter users, but now Twitter will offer 2FA using either authentication app or security key method only. .
“We encourage non-Twitter Blue customers to consider using an authentication app or security key method instead. These methods require you to have physical possession of the authentication method and are a great way to ensure Your account is secure,” Twitter said.
This decision did not go down well with many and many criticized it Elon Musk for the same.
