Mumbai:
Two 11-year-old boys drowned in a water-filled pit dug to repair a pipeline in Mumbai’s Antop Hill area on Monday evening.
He said the incident took place in the CGS Colony area and the bodies were retrieved and sent to the civil hospital for postmortem.
Police said the deceased were residents of the same locality and were a Class V student.
He said that water pipeline repair work was going on in the area and as part of the project a pit was dug and it was filled with water.
Police said it was not yet clear whether the children jumped into the pit or accidentally fell into it.
He said that necessary action would be taken if any negligence is found on the part of the people involved in the water pipeline work.
The family members of the deceased said that they were not aware of how the children reached the place where the incident took place.
A member of the victim’s family said, “We were at home when some people came looking for our children. They showed us the pictures of our children and we identified them. They told us about the drowning incident.”
He alleged that it was a case of sheer negligence.
“If the contractor had dug the pit, he should have covered it for the safety of the local residents. But it was kept open, causing our children to fall into it,” he said.
An official said that the Antop Hill police have started investigation after registering an accidental death report.
