In the incident, the Bharuch local crime branch had raided an STD PCO following information from the Hawala network and seized Rs 25 lakh in cash in June 2003. The cash and check were handed over to the local B division police station.
A month later, the cash recovered from the confiscated material store room in the police station was stolen. An attempt was made by the accused to prove that some unknown thief had fabricated the story by drilling a hole in the back wall of the room to enter the storeroom. However, during interrogation his lie was exposed and he was arrested.
While awarding the jail sentence, the court also said that it is an offense committed against the society by the public servants.
