The next day, Kaplan received a disturbing message from Uber, saying that the bill for his previous night’s ride was about Rs 32 lakh. Trainee Chef immediately contacted Uber and found out how he was charged such a huge amount for a short ride. Upon investigation, Uber found that due to some technical error, the drop-off location of the same name was set to second in Australia. The bill that Kaplan received was based on a journey of thousands of km.
Fortunately in this case, there was not enough money in Kaplan’s account and Uber was unable to deduct the amount after which it received a system generated message. As improbable as it may seem, this is not the only such incident. Earlier in 2020, another British student was billed GBP 1,536 (about Rs 1.39 lakh) after accidentally entering the wrong destination. Worse yet, the student had fallen asleep in the cab and woke up after five hours, 250 miles away from his pickup point and had a hefty amount for it.
