The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently rolled out an official notification announcing a new subject in the National Eligibility Test (NET). As per the notification, Ayurveda Biology is introduced as a subject that will remain effective from the December 2024 session. Applicants, who will fill out the UGC NET December 2024 application form, can now select the new subject, Ayurveda Biology.

This move, taken during the UGC’s 581st meeting on June 25, aims to bridge traditional Indian medicine with modern biological sciences. The introduction of Ayurveda biology highlights the commission’s commitment to integrating traditional Indian knowledge systems into higher education. This step is expected to attract more students to Ayurveda and related fields, fostering research and innovation.

“Based on the expert committee’s recommendations, the Commission, in its 581st meeting held on June 25, 2024, has decided to add “Ayurveda Biology” as an additional subject from December 2024 onwards to the existing list of subjects of UGC NET,” reads the official notice.

Unit 2: Fundamental Principles of Ayurveda and Philosophy

Unit 3: Sharira Rachna and Kriya

Unit 4: Padartha Vijnana and Dravya Vijnana

Unit 5: Bheshajya Kalpana, Rasa Shastra, and Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia

Unit 6: Disease Biology, Microbiology, and Immunology

Unit 7: Ayurgenomics, Genetics, Cell and Molecular Biology

Unit 8: Physiology, Biochemistry and Nanotechnology

Unit 9: IPR, Biodiversity and Environmental Health, and Entrepreneurship

Unit 10: Research Methodology, Biostatistics and Ayurveda-Informatics

In June this year, the commission also introduced Disaster Management as a subject. Led by the National Testing Agency (NTA), the UGC NET exams are conducted twice a year, in June and December. The UGC NET is a crucial examination for determining eligibility for lectureships and awarding Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) in universities across India.

Earlier, NTA released the UGC NET June 2024 results on October 17, along with the subject-wise and category-wise cut-offs, accessible via the official website, which is ugcnet.nta.ac.in.
