University Grants Commission (UGC) CU-Select, an integrated faculty recruitment portal for central universities, was launched on Tuesday with an aim to fast-track and streamline the process, as a large number of faculty positions remain vacant each year. The centralized portal will now be the only place where candidates will have to send their applications, making the process completely online.
According to Higher education Regulatory, the portal will allow an enabling environment for both universities and applicants to go through the process in an easy and transparent manner.
“Since the launch of the portal, for all recruitments, applicants are required to apply only on the CU-Select portal. All central universities need to deactivate their recruitment portals,” said UGC chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar, who launched the portal on Tuesday.
Using backend data analytics, UGC will collect details like how many posts have been filled, how many vacancies are there, whether reservation is being followed as per rules, etc. This will help UGC to fast track the recruitment process to CU, he said.
As many as 6,028 faculty positions, including professors, associate professors and assistant professors, are lying vacant in the country’s central universities, according to data shared by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Parliament on March 15. The minister had directed these institutes to fill the vacant posts in mission mode. Last year also more than 6,000 posts remained vacant due to delay in the recruitment process.
According to the UGC website, there are 56 central universities across the country, out of which 10 are under different ministries.
What is this portal?
CU-Selection (https://curec.samarth.ac.in/) is an integrated recruitment portal, specially designed and developed for faculty recruitment in Central Universities. This makes the recruitment process completely online from application to screening with alerts to all users of the portal.
“The universities will conduct all stages of recruitment independently, as is currently being done in the respective universities. The portal provides a common platform for listing vacancies/advertisements/jobs across all these universities,” said Professor Kumar.
Some of the salient features of the portal include Single applicant login, real-time tracking of application, individual dashboard for each applicant, admin dashboard for each university/department, built-in email communication tool, online feedback/reference to applicants. Real-time analytics and application insights.
How will it help the stakeholders involved?
For applicants, the platform provides a consolidated list of job openings across all participating universities and a single login to apply to any university. “They will be able to access the faculty application process of any CU from this single portal,” said Professor Kumar.
For universities, the platform offers real-time tracking of applications, customized admin dashboards, and configurable advertising rules. It also enables a completely online process from initial application to screening including payment gateway. The Screening Committee of the University can view the details of the applicants, marks/research scores awarded by the system and verify the documents uploaded for each entry.
Autonomy of universities in filling faculty positions?
“Using this portal, central universities will continue to advertise positions, collect online applications, shortlist applicants, conduct interviews and appoint faculty members, as they were doing earlier. UGC will maintain this portal for their benefit while it is not a centralized recruitment process. All the recruitments will be done by the respective universities,” said Kumar.
What about current vacancies?
“The existing recruitments for which advertisements have already been issued will continue without using this portal. However, all future recruitments will be on this portal, while universities may continue to advertise in newspapers with a link to the portal to fill vacancies.”
