At least one person has been killed and another injured in a vehicle explosion outside the Women’s Hospital in Liverpool, northern England, police said on Sunday. Anti-terrorism police in Britain were investigating the blast.

Police were called to report an explosion in a taxi at Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Sunday morning.

Police said they were keeping an “open mind” about the cause of the blast, but counter-terrorism police were leading the investigation as a precaution.

“As far as we understand, the car involved was a taxi, which was pulled over to the hospital shortly before the explosion,” Merseyside Police said in a statement.

“Work is still underway to establish what happened and it may take some time to be in a position to confirm anything.”

Liverpool Women’s Hospital said it immediately restricted commuting access until further notice and that patients were referred to other hospitals “where possible”.
