Kiev:

Ukraine is coming under a “massive” cyber attack, a senior minister said on Wednesday, refusing to open the main websites of the government and foreign ministry.

Deputy Prime Minister Mykalo Fedorov said the attack began in the late afternoon and affected several banks as well as official websites, without specifying its origin.

Ukraine’s cabinet of ministers and foreign ministry refused to open the official site when AFP tried to access it on Wednesday

But most of the main news sites were functioning in Ukraine, as well as those of banks and major public institutions.

Fyodorov said the working sites “have managed to switch traffic to a different provider to minimize losses.”

The sites of several ministries and banks were also closed for a few hours last week, with officials suggesting the denial of service (DDoS) attack was of Russian origin.

Ukraine faces growing fears of a Russian invasion, which intensified after the Kremlin recognized the independence of Ukraine’s two eastern separatist regions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has also approved the deployment of troops to eastern Ukraine, although he said on Tuesday that he had not yet decided to order the move.
