Ukraine strike destroys Russian electrical substation

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a power substation near the border in the Russian city of Belgorod was set ablaze by a Ukrainian strike on Friday.

“An electric substation … caught fire after the strike at Belgorod,” Gladkov said on Telegram, adding that it would take “up to four hours” to activate the backup system and restore power.

He did not specify how many people lost power in the city of 330,000, which has so far rarely been hit by Ukrainian fires, unlike the surrounding Belgorod region.

Images posted on social media showed the moment of impact with the facility in flames.

Gladkov also posted pictures of the fire, which was brought under control around 1700 GMT.

“We’re going to try to repair all the damage as quickly as possible,” Gladkov said.
