UN Biodiversity Summit moves on from China on COVID-19 policy – Times of India

Beijing: A United Nations Summit on Biodiversity will be held Canada Instead of China, organizers on Tuesday announced a second major international event to be moved from China because of its strict anti-coronavirus policies.
China’s Environment Ministry said the meeting would be held in December Montreal, where the Secretariat of the Summit Organization is located. The ministry said in a statement that the decision was made “after extensive consideration of the pandemic situation at home and abroad”.
China withdrew last month as the host of the 2023 Asian Cup of football. It has also indefinitely postponed the 2022 Asian Games, a sporting event that was due to take place in the city of Hangzhou in September.
The country has stuck to a strict “zero-Covid” policy, limiting international visitors and repeatedly shutting down parts or all cities to stamp out any outbreaks. The outlook is increasingly in line with other major countries that have eased restrictions and are moving towards living with the disease.
The Biodiversity Summit is similar to the more famous United Nations Climate Summit. Countries that join a global agreement on the conservation of the world’s plant and animal species meet regularly to achieve the goals set out in the agreement.
China will continue to serve as the chairman of the upcoming summit and the theme and logo will remain unchanged, the environment ministry said.
The Chinese capital Beijing hosted the Winter Olympics in February by creating a bubble that separated the participants from the general population in China.
