The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) recently announced that it has supported around 1.65 lakh electric vehicles in India under the second phase of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and EV) scheme. The ministry says that till November 25, 2021, the government has offered subsidy to electric vehicles in the form of demand incentive amounting to about ₹564.00 crore. In addition, the government has sanctioned 6,315 electric buses to various state/city transport undertakings under the second phase of the FAME scheme.

The ministry says it has also approved 2,877 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in 68 cities across 25 states/UTs, amounting to ₹500 crore (approximately). In addition, under the same Phase II of the FAME scheme, 1,576 charging stations worth ₹108 crore (approx.) were sanctioned on 9 expressways and 16 highways.

The FAME scheme was first formulated in March 2015, and the first phase was available till March 31, 2019. During the first phase, around 2.8 lakh hybrid and electric vehicles were supported in the form of demand incentives amounting to approximately ₹ 359 crore. MHI had also approved 425 electric and hybrid buses for various cities of the country with a total cost of around Rs 280 crore. The Ministry of Heavy Industries had sanctioned around 520 charging stations/infrastructure for ₹43 crore (approx) under the first phase of the FAME India scheme.
