New Delhi: As of January 28, out of 849 permitted shops, 552 liquor shops have been opened under the new excise policy of the Delhi government.
This policy was implemented on November 17 last year.
The updated list of all running liquor contracts has also been uploaded on the website of the Excise Department.
Under the new excise policy, the liquor business in the city was completely handed over to private players, wherein they could open 849 huge and lucrative contracts in 32 areas of at least 500 square metres.
Such outlets will also provide walk-in facility to consumers where they can choose the alcohol brand of their choice, as they do in shopping malls.
Delhi BJP, which is in power in three civic bodies – North, East And South They were opposing the policy by accusing them of opening liquor shops in violation of the rules.
Municipalities have also initiated crackdown on liquor shops, which they said were set up “illegally”.
According to civic officials, till the first week of January, the three bodies have sealed about 25 shops and issued notices against 130 such establishments.
“Our action against illegal liquor shops is on. Yesterday, we issued notices against several liquor shops for unauthorized construction and violation of building norms,” SDMC Standing Committee Chairman BK Oberoi told PTI.
Under the new policy, the Delhi government had taken out of the retail business of liquor through privatization of all 849 liquor shops, of which more than half were earlier run by its four agencies.
