‘Smart meters will be introduced using funds under the Reconstructed Distribution Area Scheme’
The central government has sanctioned Rs 354 crore under the Revamped Distribution Area Scheme to replace old equipment used for power distribution and to install smart meters in the Union Territory, Minister A. Namasviyam informed the assembly on Wednesday.
Independent MLA G. Responding to a query by Nehru, Mr. Namasivayam said that by using the funds available under the scheme, the regional administration would replace the faulty equipment and introduce smart meters. The Electricity Department has started the process of replacing faulty transformers.
The government has already sanctioned Rs 15 crore for purchasing electrical equipment. The government has proposed to install 29,000 LED street lights in the Union Territory under the Smart City project. An amount of Rs 30 crore has been set aside under the Smart City project for installing LED lights. He said that steps are being taken to improve the distribution network in Puducherry.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has assured the assembly of strict action against those running fake newspapers. Replying to a question by BJP MLA PML Kalyanasundaram, the Chief Minister said that the Collector has the right to take strict action against those publishing newspapers without registration.
Raising the issue, the MLA said that some people in the guise of media persons were trying to intimidate politicians and officials for personal gain. He said that the government should take strict action against those printing those papers without following any procedure.
