RK Singh bats for a national carbon market to promote clean energy
Union Power Minister RK Singh and Secretary Alok Kumar appreciated the efforts being made by the Andhra Pradesh government to promote energy efficiency and energy conservation on a mission mode by adopting best practices.
At a national level review meeting organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) on Sunday, Mr Singh said India announced its commitment to achieve 40% of its cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030. According to an official release, Mr Singh stressed the need for the introduction of a national carbon market to promote clean energy technologies in India in a big way, which will reduce carbonization of the economy and help mobilize international finance for mitigation of greenhouse gases. Shri Alok Kumar said that Andhra Pradesh has become a model by setting up a dedicated, standalone State Designated Agency (SDA) i.e. Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (AP-SECM) to facilitate energy saving measures. He said the Union Power Ministry would amend the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 by making it mandatory to set up state energy efficiency agencies, and lauded Energy Secretary (AP) N Srikanth for promoting energy efficiency programmes.
