For the first time in Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has decided to provide 60 days maternity leave to degree and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above so that they can continue their studies without any interruption.
According to the Press Trust of India, a release issued by the university said that the decision was taken at a syndicate meeting chaired by Pro Vice Chancellor CT Arvind Kumar on Friday.
It said the Syndicate has approved the recommendations of a committee constituted to conduct a study on the issue.
According to the university, maternity leave can be taken before or after delivery, but will be granted only for the first or second pregnancy and only once during the duration of the course.
The period of leave shall include public and general holidays and may not be combined with any other leave.
14 days leave will be given in cases of abortion, sterilization etc.
In order to ensure that the studies of the students are not affected due to pregnancy, those on maternity leave during a semester will be allowed to register for the examination of that semester, but it will be supplemented with regular students in the next semester. Can write in

The Syndicate decided that in case of practical, lab and viva examination of the students who are on maternity leave, the head of the institution or department should make necessary arrangements for the same.
The release said that the application for availing maternity leave shall be accompanied by a medical certificate from a registered doctor three days prior to the commencement of the leave.
