University of Hyderabad uses computer tools to teach Sanskrit – Times of India

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has launched an innovative, online interdisciplinary program that aims to teach Sanskrit with the help of computer tools.

OE102: Samsaadhanii Praveshika course aims at developing a belief in the student’s mind that with the help of these computational tools they can understand any Sanskrit text with some effort.

The Department of Sanskrit Studies, since its inception in 2006, is engaged in the study of Indian grammatical principles with a computational perspective. The research done by the students during the last 15 years has resulted in a computational platform that hosts many computational tools for accessing and understanding Sanskrit texts.

The collaboration between these two groups has resulted in a joint system that can analyze any Sanskrit text. This led to the development of this innovative curriculum, where traditional methods of teaching are combined with modern technology without compromising on the ‘understanding’ of Sanskrit texts.

Dr. Arjun from Manipal University, Dr. Pavankumar Satuluri of Chinmaya University, Kochi, Prof. Hyderabad University. Huet and Prof. Amba Kulkarni’s four-member team will handle the course.

The course has garnered rave reviews, with over 250 people from abroad, India, and students from the University of Hyderabad registering. Students have diverse backgrounds from the arts and humanities to engineering and medicine; They range in age from 20 to 80 years, geographically covering the entire world from Fiji to California.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. BJ Rao regarded the launch of this course as a celebration where Panini is being rediscovered through modern computational tools. According to him this course will be a trendsetter to understand how language analysis, rigor of computation and scientific methods can be used to understand ideas as well as the formation of ideas through languages.

The Vice Chancellor of Kavi Kulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University, Ramtek, Prof. Varkhedi explained that the computational platform is based on the Indian principles of analysis, generation and cognition of Sanskrit sentences, which were discussed in Vyakaranam (grammar), Nyaya (logic). and serves as a test bed to test metaphysics and their practicality over the past three millennia.
