To woo Muslim voters in Uttar Pradesh, Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has asked Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA from Rampur Azam Khan to extend an olive branch.
The move comes amid reports of resentment among Muslims against the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP. Sambhal is close to SP MP Shafiq ur Rehman Barak and Azam Khan Fasahat Ali Shanu Recently it was alleged that SP is not working for Muslims.
Earlier, Burke had said he was not satisfied with the party’s performance. A few days ago, media in-charge and close to Khan, Sanu had also alleged that Khan was being ignored by the SP chief.
Sensing the opportunity, AIMIM spokesperson Mohammad Farhan sent a three-page letter to Khan, who is presently lodged in Sitapur jail.
The AIMIM spokesperson, in his letter, has alleged that the SP is not sympathetic towards Muslims and treats them only as a vote bank.
AIMIM spokesperson Mohammad Farhan said, “The way SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is ignoring Azam Khan, it is worrying. Ever since Khan went back to Sitapur Jail after treatment at Medanta, people from all over the country have been coming to see him. But Yadav did not visit him even once, leaving him to die in Sitapur jail. About 96% of Muslims voted for the SP in the recent elections, but Yadav did not thank him even once.
“AIMIM and barrister Asaduddin Owaisi saab want Azam Khan to return to his court, it (AIMIM) is his party and his home. He should come back to his party, strengthen it further and take the party forward in the state. I have written a three-page letter to Khan. Owaisi will also go to Sitapur jail to meet Khan, we have sought time. Before anything else, we pray for his release from jail,” said an AIMIM spokesperson.
Several Muslim leaders of SP have raised their voice against Akhilesh Yadav and the party for ignoring Muslims even after getting majority from the community in the recently held state assembly elections. Inviting Khan is being seen as an attempt by the AIMIM to tighten its hold on Uttar Pradesh by wooing Muslim leaders dissatisfied with the SP.
