Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister, Suresh Kumar Khanna has allocated Rs 1,050 crore to the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana for the 2023-24 financial year in the state budget for 2023. The scheme was launched in Lucknow on October 25, 2019, and aims to provide financial assistance to families with girl children/children. The scheme provides Rs. 15,000 to families with a girl child, which will be released in six installments on completion of various milestones, such as immunization, admission to classes 1, 5, 9 and graduation. The scheme was launched with the Kanya Sumangala web portal. The launch of the scheme was marked by providing token checks and certificates to some of the beneficiaries, and around 1.25 lakh registrations have already been initiated under the scheme.

Apart from the Kanya Sumangala scheme, the 2023 Uttar Pradesh budget has also allocated Rs. 4032 crore for destitute widows. 600 crores for mass marriage scheme and Rs. 150 crore for marriage grant scheme.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria for Kanya Sumangala Yojana is that the beneficiary must be a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh, have a maximum of two daughters in the family, and have a family income of less than Rs. 3 lakh per annum. Adopted girl children are also eligible for the scheme, and in case of twin girls, the third girl child can also enroll.

Objective: Kanya Sumangala Yojana focuses on providing financial assistance to the girl child, helping girls in UP to complete their education, establishing equal sex-ratio, ending female feticide, and developing a positive mindset.

Requirements: For enrolling in the scheme, the beneficiaries will have to provide documents such as Aadhaar card, ration card, bank statement and passbook of the parent/guardian, proof of annual income and passport size photographs of the parent and the girl child.
