UP elections: 12 candidates ‘illiterates’ in second phase, 114 are educated till class 8

According to an analysis report, 114 of the candidates who are in the fray in the second phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are educated up to class 8, while 12 have declared themselves “illiterates”.

102 ‘post graduate’ candidates and six with Ph.D. are in the fray, said the report by the Uttar Pradesh Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), advocacy groups for electoral reforms.

Voting will be held on February 14 for 55 assembly seats in nine districts of western Uttar Pradesh namely Amroha, Bareilly, Bijnor, Badaun, Moradabad, Rampur, Saharanpur, Sambhal and Shahjahanpur.

The report is based on the analysis of self-affidavits of 584 candidates out of 586 candidates contesting the second phase of elections.

The report said that the affidavits of two candidates could not be analyzed as they were either badly scanned or incomplete.

As per the analysis, 12 candidates are ‘illiterates’, 67 ‘literate’, 12 have passed class 5 and 35 have passed class 8, while 58 have passed class 10 and 88 have passed class 12.

It said 108 ‘undergraduate’ candidates, 89 ‘graduate professional’, 102 ‘post graduate’, six ‘doctoral’, five ‘diploma’ candidates are in the fray, while two contestants have not submitted details of their education.

Age wise 56 candidates are between 25-30 years, 150 between 31-40 years, 179 between 41-50 years, 130 between 51-60 years, 62 between 61-70 years, six 71-80 years And as per a report, the age of the contestant is between 81-90 years.

The report said that among the candidates analyzed in the second phase, 515 (88.2 per cent) are males and 69 (11.8 per cent) are females.

Elections are being held in Uttar Pradesh in seven phases. The results of the elections will be declared on March 10.
