Accordingly, the standard tuition fee prescribed for undergraduate engineering courses in degree-granting private colleges is Rs 55,000, and Rs 30,150 for those offering diplomas in engineering. However, this is not a cap on the tuition fees charged by the institutes, clarified the Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC) of the Department of Technical Education.
At present, the fees for engineering courses in a private college range from Rs 45,000 to Rs 1.65 lakh. There are more than 750 private colleges offering technical education in UP. AFRC secretary Rajesh Chandra said institutions that disagree with the revised fee slabs have been asked to submit a suitable proposal along with their expenditure details by July 23. “The fees of such institutions will be decided after evaluation by the committee,” Chandra said.
Institutions agreeing to the revised fee slab will also have to submit their consent letter to the department. In cases where an entity does not provide a MoU (neither agree nor disagree), it will be deemed that they adhere to the standard tariff setting.
Officials said the amendment was made keeping in mind the fact that no fee was increased for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last fee revision came in 2017-18. “Both institutions and parents are facing difficulties. We have seen the time of crisis, and are trying to minimize the damage,” said an official.
However, the new fee slab which is expected to be higher than the existing fee did not go down well with the teachers. “With admissions falling every year, technical institutes are struggling to fill seats. With the hike in fees post revision, the numbers will come down significantly,” said a senior technical education faculty.
