UP MLC Election Result Updates: The counting of votes for the seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council is scheduled to begin at 8 am on Tuesday. The ruling BJP has already unanimously won nine of the 36 council seats.
The BJP already had 35 MLCs in the 100-member council, taking the total to 44 from the nine new seats. The party is only seven votes short of a parliamentary majority. Samajwadi Party has 17, BSP four, and Congress and BJP allies Apna Dal(S) and Nishad Party have one member each. Two members are members of non-political teachers’ groups, and two are independent.
Live Updates on Counting:
A senior BJP functionary was quoted by news agency IANS as saying, “If the BJP gets a majority in both the houses, it will be easier to pass bills and the government will further strengthen its position in the state assembly.”
The BJP has made a concerted effort to win the elections. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has held a virtual meeting with the elected representatives of the party. He urged legislators, district panchayat members, block development council members, mayors, municipal presidents, village heads and corporators to work together to ensure the success of BJP candidates.
The BJP’s victory would be close to a consecutive big victory in the assembly elections, and it would also give the saffron party a two-thirds majority in the Upper House. Political experts said the results could have more impact under Yogi’s leadership. Unlike the assembly elections, which also saw a major intervention from the central leadership, the council elections were largely a ‘Yogi affair’, he said.
Nine MLCs have been elected unopposed from the constituencies of eight local authorities. Badaun, Hardoi, Kheri, Mirzapur-Sonbhadra, Banda-Hamirpur, Aligarh, Bulandshahr and Mathura-Etah-Mainpuri are among the seats.
Counting of votes will be done in the collectorate located at the headquarters of 27 districts. The Election Commission and the police have made preparations for the counting of votes which will start from 8 am.
