Government of India has issued an alert for the users of Google Chrome in India Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has issued a ‘high severity’ warning to Google Chrome users. In both personal computers as well as mobile phones, Google Chrome is probably the largest used browser in the country. CERT-In says Google Chrome can be used by cybercriminals to execute arbitrary code on users’ systems.
The government has spotted various vulnerabilities in the Google Chrome browser that could allow an attacker to install malware to gain access to personal information as well as spy on targeted computers.
The government advisory states that Google Chrome has several vulnerabilities due to type confusion in V8. Tech giant Google has already fixed these vulnerabilities in the latest update of Chrome. Therefore, in the advisory issued by the government, all users have been suggested to update their browser.
Failing to update to the latest version of Google Chrome increases the chances of online attackers hacking computers remotely and leaking sensitive, personal information, government advisory said. Google mentioned that 22 types of security fixes, which were highlighted by outside researchers, have been included in the latest update of Chrome to ensure user privacy.
Along with the government advisory, Google advised Chrome users to update to the latest version. Google recently updated the Chrome stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux to 96.0.4664.93, which is available to all users. Here’s how to update Google Chrome to the latest version.
You can check for available updates on your Chrome and update it by clicking on the three vertical dots at the top right of the page. Click on About Chrome option and it will update. Restart or reboot the system and secure your credentials.
