The Global New Car Assessment Program, or GNCAP for short, announced that it has come up with an updated set of protocols for crash testing programs for Safer Cars for India and Safer Cars for Africa. These new set of protocols will now also include evaluation and scoring of the car based on the inclusion of ESC – or electronic stability control, side impact protection, and pedestrian safety.

Under pedestrian safety trials, Global NCAP will assess Potential risk of injury to pedestrian’s head, pelvis, upper and lower legs. These results also change by the materials used in the cars’ front bumpers, depending on how forgiving the pedestrian is in the event of a collision. Cars that perform well can score extra points if they have an autonomous emergency braking system that recognizes pedestrians.

In addition, the passenger safety of a car when it undergoes a side impact will also be assessed by the Global NCAP when rating cars under these programmes. To ensure robustness in engineering solutions, Global NCAP will determine whether testing will be conducted on the passenger or driver side of the vehicle using the same biomechanical and modifier criteria.
