Urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu on February 19

Tamil Nadu State Election Commissioner V Palanikumar has announced that the urban local body elections in the state will be held in a single phase on February 19, 2022.

Briefing the media on January 26, Palanikumar said that the filing of nomination papers would start from January 28. The nominations will close on February 4, while the scrutiny of nominations will take place on February 5. Candidates can withdraw their nomination papers till February. 7. Voting on 19th February will start from 7 am till 6 pm and the Election Commission will count the votes from 8 am on 22nd February.

The code of conduct has come into force for the elections in corporations, municipalities and nagar panchayats. While the election activities will end on 24 February and the newly elected members will take charge and hold their first meeting on 2 March. In Chennai, 3 IAS officers will act as election observers. 80,000 policemen are to be deployed in the election process. It is also said that voters who are infected with Kovid-19 and are found to be symptomatic can exercise their franchise in the last one hour of the election.

The State Election Commission has also announced that some posts will be elected through indirect elections.

In Tamil Nadu, urban local body representatives are to be elected by direct election for a total of 12,838 seats, which include 1,374 ward member posts in 21 corporations, 3,843 ward member posts in 138 municipalities and 7,621 ward member posts in 490 nagar panchayats. Meanwhile, it has been announced that the post of councilors in corporations, municipalities and nagar panchayats will be on party basis.

A total of 1,298 posts including mayor posts and deputy mayor posts of 21 corporations, president and vice president posts in 138 municipalities and 490 nagar panchayats respectively will be elected through indirect elections. At the same time, indirect elections will be held on March 4.
