Seoul:

North Korea criticized the recent agreement by the US, South Korea and Japan on strengthening military cooperation in the region as a means of realizing the US plan for a NATO-like military alliance.

A spokesman for North Korea’s foreign ministry referred to a question asked by KCNA, the state news agency reported on Sunday.

“The reality clearly shows that the real purpose of the US spreading rumors about a ‘threat from North Korea’ is to provide an excuse to gain military supremacy over the Asia-Pacific region,” the spokesperson said.

“In the current situation there is an urgent need to build up the country’s security to actively deal with the rapid deteriorating security environment,” the spokesman said.

The leaders of the United States, South Korea and Japan met on the sidelines of a NATO summit last week and agreed to explore further measures to strengthen “expanded resistance” against North Korea.
