Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday showed interest in contesting the elections in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, maintaining the suspense about contesting from one seat.
Amid speculation that Mr Yadav would contest from Azamgarh, possibly a seat in Gopalpur, he said as a representative of the Lok Sabha constituency, he would have to seek people’s permission. “If I contest elections, I will seek permission of the people of Azamgarh before contesting,” he said.
Mr. Yadav’s statement could also mean that he may contest from a seat outside Azamgarh and was simply seeking the approval of voters in Azamgarh for a change.
While BJP leader Yogi Adityanath, who is the chief minister, and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya were declared candidates from Gorakhpur and Sirathu seats, the saffron party is pressurizing Mr Yadav to reveal whether he is going to contest.
Mr. Maurya said that Mr. Yadav was afraid of contesting elections. ,[He] It took so long to find a safe seat. Akhilesh Yadav is afraid of contesting elections on the basis of development.
While Mr. Yadav has been an MP and nominated to the UP Legislative Council, he has never contested an MLA election.
