Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is likely to contest the bypoll to Champawat assembly seat, top sources told CNN-News18.
According to sources, the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has given its approval to this plan.
After losing the assembly election from Khatima, Dhami needs to become an MLA within six months of taking oath as CM. Sources said sitting Champawat MLA Kailash Gahtodi is likely to resign soon.
Earlier also, Gehtodi had proposed to vacate his seat from Dhami. BJP’s state media in-charge Manveer Chauhan had said that Kapkot MLA Suresh Gadiya and four other BJP MLAs had also offered to give up their seats for Dhami.
Champawat seat is adjacent to Khatima.
The BJP created history in the hill state by retaining power as every other previous government was voted out. It won 47 seats in the 70-member assembly.
Thakur leader Dhami was first sworn in as chief minister last July. As a former president of the BJP youth wing, Dhami enjoys cordial relations with the youth cadre. The party believes that Dhami helped curb the anti-incumbency wave to some extent.
