MDMK general secretary Vaiko’s son has been appointed as the party’s headquarters secretary after secret voting was held at the party headquarters in Chennai today.
Durai Vaiyapuri, 49, was not active in politics except for campaigning during elections as he was more into business. He has now joined the political party as his father is becoming weak.
Family politics is not new to Tamil Nadu. But incidentally, MDMK chief Vaiko is the same person who spoke out against dynasty politics, quit DMK and started his own political organization when DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi gave prominence to his son MK Stalin in 1994.
He said, ‘Don’t call it dynasty politics. I was not keen on bringing him into politics, but party workers insisted that he had the ability to rise to the top and so it was done in a democratic manner, “He got 104 votes out of 106. It was a vote of the party members. The decision is there,” Vaiko says. The press conference that took place after the promotion.
“It is inevitable, only Durai Vaiyapuri can keep the party going and going as our Thalaivar (leader) is getting old. This is the need of the hour.
“We cannot draw a parallel line between what happened in 1994, DMK was a big party and it had a lot of leaders from the other set which MDMK does not have now. So Durai Vaiyapuri has been formally inducted and he will be Vaiko’s political successor no matter what,” says senior journalist Bhaskar Babu on today’s developments.
Durai managed to garner the support of around 25 district secretaries of the party in the last two years. He also accompanied his father on political campaigns since the 2016 assembly elections, indicating that he would be the successor.
Social media is full of comments on the irony of how the MDMK, a political outfit swimming against the DMK’s dynastic politics, had to resort to similar politics to maintain the party hierarchy.
