Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Varun Singh’s health condition has “fluctuating” but he will win the battle and come out as he is a “fighter”, his father said on Saturday.
Group Captain Singh is the sole survivor of the helicopter crash in which Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and 12 others were killed, and is currently being treated at the Command Hospital in Bengaluru.
CDS Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 armed forces personnel were killed in a Mi-17V5 helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Group Captain Singh, a respected officer, was on board a Russian-made helicopter as liaison officer for the visit of General Rawat, India’s most senior military officer, to the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington.
Speaking to PTI over phone from Bengaluru, Varun Singh’s father Colonel KP Singh (Retd.), who lives in Bhopal, said, “There are so many ups and downs that how (my son is) cannot be defined. “
He said that his son’s health is being monitored every hour.

The Group Captain was awarded the Shaurya Chakra in August for averting a possible mid-air accident after his Tejas light combat aircraft was hit by a major technical glitch last year.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had told the Lok Sabha on Thursday that all efforts were being made to rescue the Group Captain, who was then on life support at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu.
He was admitted to a hospital in Wellington after receiving severe burns following Wednesday’s accident. He was initially taken by road to Sulur in an ambulance and then to Bengaluru for better treatment.
Officials had said on Friday that the condition of the Group Captain was critical but stable.
