On the eve of the 74th Republic Day, the Government of India announced that SRD Prasad, Santhoiba Sharma and Gurcharan Singh would be honored with the Padma Shri awards. Sportspersons like Kalaripayattu master SRD Prasad, Santhoiba Sharma of Thang Ta Guru, former cricketer and veteran cricket coach Gurcharan Singh will be honored with the Padma Shri for distinguished service in their respective fields of sports. The President of India on Wednesday approved 106 Padma Awards, of which three were given to sportspersons.
The awards are given in various disciplines and fields of activities such as arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service.
‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of a high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in a specified field.
The awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day. The awards are presented by the President of India at formal functions usually held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan around March and April every year.
