Opposition vice-presidential candidate Margaret Alva on Saturday congratulated NDA’s Jagdeep Dhankhar on winning the election and said the fight is over, to protect the Constitution, strengthen democracy and restore the dignity of Parliament. Alva said that he believes that such parties and leaders have damaged their reputation by supporting the BJP in this election. “Congratulations to Mr. Dhankhar on being elected as the Vice President! I would like to thank all the Leaders of the Opposition, and the MPs of all the parties who voted for me in this election. Also, to all the volunteers for their selfless service during our short term but Intense campaign,” he said soon after Dhankhar was declared elected as the 14th Vice President of India. Former West Bengal governor Dhankhar got 528 votes, while 80-year-old Alva got 182 votes.

“This election was an opportunity for the opposition to work together, put the past behind and build trust between each other. Unfortunately, some opposition parties have tried to derail the idea of uniting, directly or indirectly. chose to support the BJP from the opposition. Taking a dig at the opposition parties which have extended their support to the NDA in this election, he said, “I believe that by doing so these parties and their leaders have damaged their credibility. This election is over. The fight to protect our Constitution, strengthen our democracy and restore the dignity of Parliament will continue.”
The Trinamool Congress, which has 36 MPs, including 23 in the Lok Sabha, stayed away from this election. Some other parties like BSP and SAD extended their support to Dhankhar of NDA.
