A video showing a policeman pouring water from a bottle on people sleeping on the platform of Pune railway station is going viral on social media. The short clip was shared by user Roopen Chowdhary on Twitter on Friday.

The video shows a Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel sprinkling water on people sleeping on the railway station platform. Sharing the clip, the user wrote, “RIP humanity. Pune railway station.”

Since being shared, the video has caught the attention of several social media users. This also caught the attention of Pune’s Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Indu Dubey, who termed the incident as extremely regrettable.

“Sleeping on the platform causes inconvenience to others, however the way it was handled is not an appropriate way of advising passengers,” Ms Dubey said. However, he added that “the staff concerned have been appropriately advised to treat passengers with respect, courtesy and decorum. The incident is deeply regretted.”

Meanwhile, the video has garnered over 2 million views and over 11,000 likes. In the comments section, while some users called the incident “shameful”, others tagged the officials concerned and demanded better waiting rooms.

One user wrote, “Government should make more waiting areas so that they don’t have to sleep on platform and yes trains should be on time.” “Shame on this policeman!” Said another.

Some users also commented in favor of the police. One wrote, “I find it a very mild way of enforcing the rule or law of not sleeping on the platform. It’s like a reminder.” Another said, “Hats off to this policeman for performing his duty in such a creative way. If people start sleeping on platforms, stairs etc, imagine how commuters in a hurry will go through.”
