Vinay Kumar Saxena will be the new Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi as President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted the resignation of Anil Baijal, Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a release on Monday.
Mr Baijal had resigned last week citing personal reasons.
According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement, “The President of India is pleased to appoint Shri Vinay Kumar Saxena as the Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from the date of his assumption of office.”
The Chairman of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) Mr. Saxena is working in many positions. He founded an NGO in Gujarat that opposed Medha Patkar’s Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA).
The position of the LG is important as it provides a vital link between the Modi government at the Center and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi.
“On behalf of the people of Delhi, I extend a warm welcome to the newly appointed Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Shri Vinay Kumar Saxena. For the betterment of Delhi, he will get full support from the cabinet of Delhi government, tweeted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Praising the outgoing LG, Mr. Kejriwal said: “With Mr. Anil Baijal as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, we have done many things and tried to fix many problems. He is a very nice person. I wish him the future. I wish him all the best and wish him good health and long life.”
