Across Belagavi, Ganesh Utsav Mandals organize public ceremonies, in which idols of the deity are installed in streets, circles and playgrounds. The Belagavi district unit of the BJP has decided to put up posters of Savarkar in all these pandals during the 11-day program beginning in late August.

Belagavi city BJP MLAs Abhay Patil and Anil Beneke said on Sunday that Ganesh mandals would be allowed to display posters of Savarkar, “who is credited with rewriting the story of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857”. He called it the “First War of Indian Independence”.
Patil said: “No power can stop Savarkar’s photographs from appearing in Belagavi. Those questioning Savarkar should read his biography and those opposing these efforts will have to face the consequences.”
Beneke said: “Savarkar has close links with Belagavi. He was kept in Hindalga jail in Belagavi. There is no question of bowing before the opposition. Savarkar was arguably one of the greatest freedom fighters of the country.”
