Condemning the recent clashes inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Jagdish Kumar on Tuesday said “any kind of violence should be avoided”.
“Every university has its own safety and security guidelines. Whenever such incidents happen, the administration investigates the reasons. The administration will investigate all aspects of such incidents and ensure that such incidents do not happen in future,” said Kumar, who was the chairman of the UGC before holding the top post in the UGC.
The violence took place at the university’s Kaveri hostel on Sunday allegedly over non-vegetarian food being served in the mess and performing a ‘havan’ on the occasion of Ram Navami.
Two student groups filed police complaints against each other on Monday, while JNU authorities claimed that the violence took place after some students objected to the havan, which was also claimed by the RSS-affiliated ABVP.
The university administration has warned students of disciplinary action if they are found indulging in any kind of violence on the campus.
