Eating out is no longer a casual affair but a planned and organized one. Gone are the days when we used to decide where to eat according to our mood, whims and preferences. In the post-COVID era, every time we go out for a meal – it should be nothing short of perfect. A common practice among foodies is that restaurants are checked on the basis of popular ratings and Dining Out applications. It is generally believed that the higher the restaurant’s rating out of five stars, the better. However, a person recently pointed out that for authentic Asian restaurants – restaurants with a 3.5 star rating would actually be the best. Wonder what that meant? Watch this viral video to understand his interesting theory:
I only eat at 3.5 star Chinese restaurants on Yelpie pic.twitter.com/nwKjeI9bcd— Freddie Wong (@fwong) 13 September 2022
The video was shared on Twitter by user Freddy Wong (@fwong). It went viral, garnering over 3.8 million views, 141k likes and 16k retweets in a span of just 24 hours. “I only eat at Chinese restaurants with 3.5 stars on Yelp,” he revealed in the caption.
In the viral video, Freddie Wong revealed that the best Chinese or Asian restaurants in most metropolitan cities had a rating of exactly three and a half stars. “Exactly three and a half. Not three, not four. Three and a half stars are the sweetest place for authentic Chinese food,” he said in the video. Then, he went on to give examples of popular restaurant in his city. When the restaurant had 2.5 stars, they said it was too bad. Conversely, when the restaurant had 4 stars, they felt that it was liked by many because of the service but the food was average. However, if the restaurant was given a 3.5 star rating, it meant that the food was good but the service was average. Thus, Asian restaurants received lower ratings by people but actually served better food.

Looking for a good Chinese place in your neighborhood? This restaurant rating principle can help.
“Here’s my theory. There are different cultural expectations for service in Asia. They’re not active, they’re not going to come to you, you need to take down the waiters. People are closing these restaurants because their service is bad However, the food balances it out,” Wong said in his video. “That’s how you give them three and a half spots. That’s the sweet spot. Trust me,” he concluded.
Several Twitter users reacted to the viral video explaining why restaurants with three and a half star ratings are the norm. One user said, “I’ve never thought of this before. It means a lot.” Hong KongI feel very inclined to agree with his assessment.” A few others also added, “Make this man the new king.” Food delivery application DoorDash also reacted to the viral video.
