Virender Sehwag calls Dinesh Karthik guilty of Ravi Ashwin-Eoin Morgan controversy

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag recalled an incident when CSK captain M S Dhoni scolds Ravichandran Ashwin for giving an animated farewell to Glenn Maxwell IPL Match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings (Kings XI Punjab). Although Sehwag did not say when the match took place, it is certain that the incident happened during the 2014 IPL.

“Even when I was playing for Punjab, Ashwin got Maxwell out, picked up some dust and blew it (in celebration). I didn’t like that scene either but I didn’t come out in public to say that he shouldn’t have done it or it was against the spirit of the game although MS Dhoni was very angry with it and scolded him a lot. Sharing his thoughts on the ‘spirit of the game’ after the Ashwin-Morgan war of words in IPL 2021, Cricbuzz on Tuesday was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Sehwag, who was on the non-striker’s end when the incident happened in 2014, mentioned that he did not like the celebration, but did not talk about it in order not to start a debate on the ‘spirit of cricket’. He also believed that things that happen inside should stay inside.

He said, “But Ashwin wanted to do this and if someone came talking about it in the media or on social media, maybe there would have been a ruckus too. It’s the player’s responsibility, isn’t it? Whatever happens inside must remain inside. If more things start coming out from the inside, I can guarantee that every match will have something that will cause a ruckus. The spirit of the game also says that players should leave what happens inside the field and move on.”

Ashwin on Thursday explained through a series of tweets that he had not seen the ball hitting non-striker and Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant. But even if the ball had hit Pant, he would have gone for a run, as it was within the rules of the game.

Sehwag believed that Kolkata wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik should not have explained what happened on the field. He said, ‘I consider Dinesh Karthik to be the biggest culprit in all this. If Morgan hadn’t talked about what she said, there wouldn’t have been such an uproar. If he had said, ‘It wasn’t much, it was just an argument, happens in the game, go ahead,’ he would have come across in that sense. What was the need to explain that someone thinks this or that?”
