Visakhapatnam: Over 18,000 runners participate in Vizag Navy Marathon

The seventh edition of Limca Sportz Vizag Navy Marathon, held at RK Beach Road on Sunday, saw participation from 18,172 runners who registered for the event.

Apart from runners comprising children, youth, senior citizens, naval personnel and foreigners from all over India and abroad participating in different categories of the marathon, a large number of volunteers also lined up early in the morning. Cheer the runners along the beautiful beach route.

A total of 432 runners participated in the full marathon, which was flagged off by Race Director Muralidhar Nannapaneni. The half marathon, which was jointly flagged off by Commodore Naresh Wariku, Commanding Officer INS Kalinga and Milind Soman, saw the participation of 1,344 runners. The 10 kilometer run had 3,439 runners and was flagged off by Vice Admiral Sreekumar Nair, DGNP, Vizag.

The 5 km run recorded the highest ever participation of 12,959 runners and was jointly flagged off by Rear Admiral Sandeep Pradhan CSO (P&A), Eastern Naval Command and cine actor Adivasi Shesh.

The prize distribution ceremony was attended by runners and spectators on the beach. Industries and IT Minister Gudivada Amarnath was the chief guest of the function. He was received by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsyayan, Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command.

Susan Chebet and Vadde Navya were the winners in the women’s section of full and half marathon races respectively. In the men’s section, Vishal Abhishek Duriya and Ramavath Ramesh Chandra emerged as winners in the full and half marathon respectively. In the 10 kilometer race, V. Jyoti was the winner in the women’s category, while Hastiram Jharwal was the winner in the men’s category.

The Indian Navy thanked the people of Visakhapatnam, district administration, police, participants, volunteers, guests and sponsors for the successful conduct of the event.
