Visakhapatnam railway station is set for a makeover under the ambitious station redevelopment program as the city will soon turn into the headquarters of the new South Coast Railway zone. Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has invited bids for the redevelopment of Visakhapatnam railway station at a cost of Rs 393 crore. While the last date for submission of bids is August 12, the redevelopment work has been targeted to be completed in 36 months.
According to RLDA Vice President Ved Prakash Dudeja, the project will be taken up on EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) mode to create world class facilities to the passengers.

“Visakhapatnam is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. The development of IT sector in recent times has given a great boost to the economic activities in the city.
The redevelopment of Visakhapatnam railway station will have a manifold impact on the local economy and further accelerate the development,” Dudeja said in a release here on Monday. RLDA is a statutory body under the Ministry of Railways for development of railway land for commercial use. .
The upgraded station will be made universally accessible with state-of-the-art skywalks, allowing seamless movement of passengers. According to the RLDA, a roof plaza connecting the departure hall with a common waiting area will be built above the platforms to facilitate easy movement of passengers.
A commercial area on the multi-level car parking, Internet-of-Things-based smart parking management system, retail and office space, retiring rooms and a medical emergency room are some of the features planned as part of the redevelopment.
